Contractors report strong development

The good times for construction in Arkansas rolls along easier. The contractors have to continue in the long term than a decade, despite the recession in demand concerns and the shadows of 11 September.

“It is without doubt the strongest I have seen, as in years,” said Bob Shell, president of Baldwin & Shell Construction Co. of Little Rock. “This is a very healthy economy of construction at this time . ”

At least 65 projects worth $ 5 million or more are under construction in the country. Together, they have a combined value of over $ 854 million.

The completion of work to expand and improve Razorback Stadium at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville opened the door to a new project to climb to number 1 on the ground.

The project, in a final cost estimated at $ 106 million, also happen to be replaced by an institutional project to another article Flintco Inc. Memphis is the construction of a monitoring $ 86.4 million in Federal Prison near Forrest City. It is one of three prisons, the list of large commercial projects around Arkansas.

Nabholz Construction Corp. of Conway and its various divisions in the early charts for the number of projects on the list of 14, worth over $ 137.6 million.

“It is a full strength of our business,” said Dan Nabholz, President of the construction Nabholz. “Everybody is busy, and we have a delay in labour matters. North-West was created primarily to.

Nearly a third major work this year on the list include, in north-west of Arkansas. Construction in central Arkansas, especially Little Rock-North Little Rock, accounts for another third. The other projects are scattered throughout the state.

Baldwin & Shell has the next Arkansas In total, more than seven projects worth $ 5 million or more in the movement. The total of these values during the clerical $ 84 million, and more are on tap water, but later this year.

Three of the biggest contracts of the company arrived, but has not yet started building are $ 35 million a new look and strengthening the Presbyterian Village in the west of Little Rock, $ 16 million biotechnology building on the campus of Arkansas State University Jonesboro and a $ 7.8 million science building on the campus flirt Smith College in Little Rock.

“From our pipeline, it is still quite construction, transportation until the end of von’03,” said Shell. “I talked with a number of architects in December, and it realizes that they have enough work until the end of summer or the end of the year already. If the architects are employed , Ie that we will occupy. ”

Former indications that the 11 September perhaps an influence on decisions for the new construction project is not yet really played, according to Shell.

“9-11 has not really affected what we have worked,” he said. “No owners have revised the plan or delayed. Lower interest are only packages in a better financial aid for homeowners, no construction.

Bill Clark, Chairman of the Commission partner of Little Rock, reported that the number of new projects, up to a bid of $ 4 million - $ 10 million range has lost. He noted that some customers remain reluctant, despite the attraction of low interest rates.

“Interest rates are at home helping contractors work more commercial people,” said Clark. “Our work has arrested several. But we have quite some major projects, we begin to set in the next 60 days.

Among the largest are $ 110 million Clinton Presidential Library in downtown Little Rock and the new Immanuel Baptist Church in west Little Rock, $ 32 million construction project.

University / University and health care remains alive for the construction.

“These two markets have been really hard, and we see, they remain that way in 2003,” said Nabholz. “The events of 9-11, attention Sign up for construction.

“The delay likely that some projects and perhaps even some have stopped, while the economy of Arkansas has not badly done, that the comparison with other parts of the country.

“Regarding the reduction of interest rates, this is more a problem of perception of nature, a precursor of things to come, rather than the actual costs of quality.”

The low cost of borrowing money will help the board of concern for the future. This indicator is optimistic help buoy the mood of the construction.

The flow of money from the bourse Donald W. Reynolds Foundation as a contribution to the procession of projects, too.

Three out of a total of $ 25 million this year on the list, and others are planned for next year. The non-profit group continue to struggle with its draw for the $ 1 billion charity chest faster than appreciate it.
